2 Top five finishes for Williams at Red Bull Ring gaining valuable points!

Fortunately the rain managed to stay away for Qualifying in the morning Saturday at the Red Bull Ring for Round 6 of the Euroformula Open Championship. On Williams first run of tyres the Perth driver managed to set a competitive time of 1:25.5 to be P4 at the half way point which was the first focus in case rain did eventuate during the session.

On the second set of tyres Williams found even more pace to post a 1:24.4 which placed him in P5 only 4 tenths off the Pole Position time. For his first time at the circuit, the team were very pleased with this result.

The start of Race 1 was incredibly intense. Firstly the driver of P2 jumped the start, but Calan got away well off the line. Into turn 1 he ducked to the inside and managed to avoid both Carlin cars who span in front of him. Down the back straight the field was extremely congested and they bunched into a drag race almost 4 cars wide. Into the hard braking Calan set up to the outside of the pack and managed to make a move hard on the brakes gaining two positions.

From there Calan was holding 3rd position but after the safety car restart he eventually lost out after a battle with the driver behind to move to 4th place. where he would eventually cross the finish line. Solid result for both Calan and the team.

After qualifying P8 on the grid for Race 2 Calan got away well off the line to immediately pick up a position into turn 1, and then got straight into the slip stream of Christian Hahn down the long back straight. Into the hard braking corner Calan was able to duck to the inside and make the move stick to move into 6th position. Two corners later he followed this up by making a move up the inside of Jack Doohan and held him out on the dirty side of the track to take 5th position.

From here Calan was once again on the tail of Lukas Dunner and again we stretched a long gap back to the rest of the field. Pushing hard Calan tried to catch Lundqvist ahead of him, but in the end finished just over a second behind in 5th place, and a very good result and nice collection of Championship points.
