ALPS team give great showing at the Red Bull Ring

24th – 25th May, Red Bull Ring  – The Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS team took to the Austrian circuit of the Red Bull Ring this weekend. The team of Charles Leclerc, Martin Kodric and Thiago Vivacqua took some positive results from both races and Fortec now sit second in the overall team standings.

For Charles Leclerc the weekend got off to a superb start when the Monaco racer took pole position in qualifying. However this was then to be snatched away when organisers deemed the driver to have crossed the track limits at the exits of turn 8 and 9 and Leclerc was moved down into fifth.

The start of race one got off to a good start for all the Fortec team, with Kodric and Vivacqua powering off the line whilst Leclerc managed to move into fourth.

For Kodric his race was short lived as he made contact with Denis Korneev (Jenzer Motorsport) and retired from the race. After a brief safety car period the field was racing again and Leclerc continued to fight for a top three position. However, with little room for maneuver the young driver went on to finish fourth. Teammate Vivacqua crossed the line in 17th.

The second race saw a chaotic start for the midfield. Contact off the start-line saw two racers retire, Vivacqua unfortunately became tangled in the incident and fell to the back of the grid, whilst teammates Leclerc and Kodric fought on nearer the front of the field.

Leclerc was on the charge from fourth after gaining a position, and a battle soon ensued with Nyck de Vries (Koiranen GP) and Alessio Rovera (Cram Motorsport) for second and third. As the trio delivered a good battle Leclerc piled on the pressure, going passed de Vries to sit in third behind Rovera. With three laps to go, and less than three seconds covering the top five, de Vries attacked Leclerc and the Fortec racer fell back into fourth where he stayed until the chequered flag. Kodric crossed the line in a respectable 10th whilst Vivacqua fought back to finish 14th.

Reflecting on the weekend, Leclerc said:

“We were really fast during the whole meeting but we have been unlucky. In qualifying I took the pole but my fastest lap was deleted because of an error of myself in another lap.

“The Red Bull Ring is a track where it is hard to overtake due to the majority of fast corners. In race one we were really fast during all the race.”

“In race 2 I started fifth again. We were again really fast during all the race and I was third for most of it but de Vries passed me three laps to the end and I didn’t had the chance to pass him back after. We haven’t shown our real potential this weekend because of the lap being cancelled in qualifying, but anyway, this is part of racing! I would like to thank Fortec for the amazing job they do!”
