14 May ALPS team show great pace in Pau
Race one of the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS was a closely fought battle for the 24-car strong field.
Teammates Ben Barnicoat and Charles Leclerc were on the charge from the start, moving through the order and challenging George Russell (Koiranen GP) to try and move into fourth.
Leclec, pushing from sixth, closed in on Barnicaot in fifth. Both battled with Russell who remained in fourth, however as the trio fought on it was Russell who came out on top and Barnicoat and Leclerc crossed the line fifth and sixth respectively.
Martin Kodric crossed the line in twelfth, whilst Thiago Vivacqua finished eighteenth.
Due to the weather conditions and a wet track, the field got underway for race two of the weekend behind the safety car. Unfortunately Thiago Vivacqua didn’t take his place on the grid and was forced back to the Fortec garage.
As the safety car was called in and racing got underway, mistakes and contacts forced several retirements as the outcome of the weather mixed with the characteristics of the street circuit took its toll. Bad luck hit Ben Barnicoat who made contact at ‘Lycée Barthou’ sending him out of the race on the eighth lap.
For Charles Leclerc and Martin Kodric the race continued and both were setting good pace. Leclerc took the lead of the race and made no mistakes, cruising to the chequered flag and taking his first podium of the year. Kodric also took a great points finish in fifth.
The next round of the Formula Renault 2.0 ALPS will take place on the 24th/25th May at the Red Bull Ring, Austria.
