15 Jun Barnicoat takes maiden win
14-15th June 2014 – The Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup headed to Hockenheim this weekend for their third round of the season. Ben Barnicoat had his best weekend of the series so far, taking his maiden win in the category in race two as well as a podium finish for race one. Teammates Martin Kodric, Jorge Cevallos and Seb Morris also had successful races, with Morris taking points for fifth and ninth place finishes.
Taking place in dry conditions, qualifying was close between the whole field. Morris and Barnicoat traded times, with Morris posting a time of 1:38.368 to take second on the grid for race one, whilst Barnicoat would line up just behind in third. In qualifying for race two Barnicoat found good pace, setting a lap time of 1.37.522 and taking pole. Race three was a reverse grid of the first six cars from race one.
Lining up in second for Saturday’s first race Morris had a good start as Louis Deletraz (Kaufmann Racing), who started in fourth, moved himself between him and teammate Barnicoat. However Morris damaged his car shortly after and headed back to the pits to change his damaged front wing. The young Welshman rejoined the race and went on to finish 21st.
Meanwhile Barnicoat had got into second. The Racing Steps Foundation backed driver kept his pace throughout, maintaining his position up until the chequered flag and taking a well deserved podium position. Teammate Kodric crossed the line in 11th and Cevallos 17th.
After the success of the first race, Barnicoat was feeling positive as he lined up on pole for Sunday morning’s race. As the lights went out the Brit made a good getaway, holding onto his lead and pulling out a gap in the first few laps. Barnicoat continued on and took a faultless maiden win, whilst Morris took 5th, Kodric 12th and Cevallos 14th.
“I had a really good race, my first overall win and my second podium this weekend. In the first two laps I pulled a gap but in the next four or five laps I was a little nervous as Steijn Schothorst came closer and put me under some pressure but I managed to keep him at bay and take my first win!” Said Barnicoat.
The third and final race of the weekend saw a reverse grid of the first six cars from race one. Barnicoat lined up fifth and made a good start, getting up into fourth and challenging for a top three position. However contact had damaged the racers front wing and Barnicoat slipped into sixth, where he stayed up until the chequered flag.
“I had a good start making my way up to fourth but then in turn 6 I got hit by another driver and got damage to my front wing but I managed to stay in P6 and get some reasonable points considering the damage.” Commented Barnicoat.
Starting from 21st Morris had a sterling race, charging through the field to finish ninth. Cevallos crossed the line in 15th, whilst Kodric suffered from bad luck and contact, retiring on the opening lap.
Reflecting on a successful weekend, Barnicoat commented: “Overall I had a great weekend, first pole, two podiums, a win and a massive amount of points towards my championship campaign – which I am extremely happy with. A great weekend! Big thanks to the team, my mechanic and engineer especially for the hard work!”
The next round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup takes place over the weekend of the 25-26th July at Spa Francorchamps.
