Cao leads championship, Rao second

Santino Ferrucci made his Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Championship debut with Fortec Motorsport at Brands Hatch and flew to victory at the first race of the weekend.

Ferrucci led from pole position, extending his advantage on teammate Hong Wei Cao to more than five seconds to control the race, before backing off to celebrate his win across the line.

Cao took a comfortable second place, whilst championship rival and team-mate Matt Rao just missed out on a podium finish to cross the line in fourth. Second place for Cao however meant maximum points to put him back into the championship lead, with Ferrucci not taking points from his one-off British F3 visit.

Race two on Sunday saw Saturday’s race one top four drivers line up on the grid in reverse order.

Cao powered off the start-line and took the race lead from pole-sitter and teammate Rao. Cao then wasted no time in pulling away, extending the gap with a succession of fastest lap times and eventually taking the win with Rao second.

Ferrucci made his second appearance on the podium for the weekend, finishing in third place to round out an all Fortec Motorsport podium.

The third and final race of the weekend saw a faultless drive saw by Ferrucci and he flew to victory around the Kent circuit.

As the lights went out, Ferrucci jumped teammate Cao for the lead. Cao could only manage the gap between himself and the race leader, and Ferrucci continued to set a succession of fastest laps. The two battled one but it was Ferrucci who went on to take his second win of the weekend. Cao took second and Rao crossed the line third, completing an all Fortec podium for the second time of the weekend.

Cao now leads the championship, just 15 points ahead of Rao in second. The final round at Donington on the 13th-14th of September will see the pair fight it out for the title!
