31 Aug Gill has strong weekend
Fortec racer Alex Gill had a strong showing in the Protyre Formula Renault this weekend. Snetterton hosted the fourth race meeting of the year and saw Gill take points for two fourth place finishes in the first two races, and finish on the podium in second for the final race on Sunday.
Saturday’s qualifying saw Gill have fantastic pace, consistently increasing his lap times as the session continued. The young Brit put in a lap time of 1:51.005 to start on pole for the first race of the weekend.
Lining up on the front row of the grid, Gill made a good getaway and led the way, opening up a good gap from second.
However bad luck came on lap three when the pole position qualifier, and fellow front-row starter Piers Hickin (Scorpio Motorsport), were both served with drive-through penalties.
Judged by the Clerk of the Course to have both made false starts, Gill pitted at the end of the third lap, ultimately crossing the line in fourth.
Race two once again saw Fortec Motorsports Alex Gill line-up on pole position. However a highly unfortunate stall paved the way for the pack behind to squeeze through.
Gill soon got going again and fought his way back up the order into fourth, holding his position up until the chequered flag.
Determined to make amends for stalling in race two, Gill made a superb start to race three from third place and almost managed to edge ahead of pole-qualifier Pietro Fittipaldi (MGR) into Riches.
Gill piled on the pressure to the championship leader early on and there was very little separating the duo.
A battle soon ensued and Fittipaldi did manage to edge a second clear of Gill by lap nine, but the Fortec teenager hit back and pinched the fastest lap of the race on the penultimate lap.
With limited time left to chase for the win, Gill crossed the line in a very respectable second and now sits third in the overall championship.
Reflecting on his last race of the weekend, Gill commented: “I had a great start and got into second but times were close with the leader so I couldn’t really close the gap in. I got the fastest lap which was good. I’m just sorry to all my team, they gave me a great car but my mistakes cost me a lot but to be third in the championship is a positive result.”
