23 May Igor Walilko scores points in both races at Spa
Igor Walilko finished inside the points scoring top 10 in both races of the second round of the Euroformula Open series but left the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium disappointed after an unlucky weekend.
Sixth overall after round one in Estoril and fast in practice on Friday, Walilko was aiming for a podium finish in race one when he got struck by another car at the end of the Kemmel Straight which forced him to nurse his damaged car to the finish in seventh.
A wet race two on Sunday saw the Fortec Motorsports driver airborne over a kerb after losing downforce following another car through the notoriously fast Eau Rouge, with more damage leaving him in ninth, but at least again inside the points scoring top 10.
After two of the eight races of the Euroformula Open series the 18-year-old Pole from Zielona Gora is eighth overall with round three taking place in Paul Ricard in France in a fortnight.
“Obviously I’m very disappointed with how the weekend at Spa had gone as after my last year’s podium here I was confident I could score a similar result again. We didn’t have the right settings all weekend and struggled in both qualifying sessions but I was still on course for two good results in the races. Unfortunately I got hit in race one which damaged the car and I couldn’t keep my pace, eventually finishing seventh. In race two I was feeling really good in the wet and was just about to make a pass when I lost downforce in Eau Rouge and bounced of the kerb which damaged the car again. At least we scored points in both races this weekend but I was hoping for a lot more. As a team we need to improve the setup of the car for Paul Ricard where I hope we’ll be able to show our full potential.”
