Leclerc takes Rookie Championship title

Fortec racers Matt Parry, Charles Leclerc, Jack Aitken, Martin Kodric, Martin Rump and Thiago Vivacqua travelled to Jerez last weekend for the final round of the Formula Renault ALPS. The results demonstrated the vast experience of the team, with Parry taking a podium finish and Leclerc taking the Rookie championship title and the vice champion title in the overall championship.

With several Eurocup frontrunners in the 31-car field, the level of competition was high and Leclerc knew he had to be on top form in order to keep at the top of the leader board. The first race of the weekend saw Parry narrowly miss on a podium finish in fourth with Aitken seventh, Kodric 20th, Rump 26th and Vivaqua 27th. Leclerc went on to finish sixth seeing the rookie championship decider go on into race two.

Race two was to determine the rookie championship. Leclerc, from Monaco, went on to have a great race and finished seventh to take the title – also taking second overall in the championship. With the combination of a large grid and the circuit layout, there were not many passing opportunities and the field ran largely in the same order as it had formed up on the grid.

For Aitken, a crash in the first corner that involved him, Bruno Bonifacio (Prema Powerteam) and Anthoine Hubert (Tech1 Racing) unfortunately saw his race end early.

Parry started near the front of the grid and made sure he was always fighting for a podium position. Olsen was piling on the pressure from behind, but Parry set his sights on second-placed Egor Orudzhev and made a move to try and overtake. He unfortunately was denied the position but crossed the line third and took a well-deserved spot on the podium.

Leclerc went on to take the rookie championship title with a seventh place finish. Meanwhile Vivacqua crossed the line 20th and Kodric 25th.
