Maldonado gains first place finish at historic Silverstone circuit

The team journeyed to the iconic Silverstone circuit last weekend with drivers Johnathan Hoggard, Manuel Maldonado and Kris Wright to compete in rounds 19, 20 and 21 of the British F3 Championship.

Friday consisted of an intended four test sessions. The first session commenced under wet conditions with Johnathan finishing in P2 with Maldonado also in the top ten with a P7 finish. Rain continued on into the second testing session with Hoggard finishing P5, however, the session ended early due to reports of oil on the circuit. The third session was an unexpected end to the day as the final session was cancelled due to red flags signally more rain. However, Hoggard managed to improve upon his performance from the previous session finishing P4. 

Saturday began with qualifying under cloudy but dry conditions as the drivers headed out onto the 3.6604 mile circuit, all vying for crucial positions. The British driver Hoggard qualified P4, only 0.107 seconds behind P3. Venezuelan driver Maldonado and American Wright qualified P13 and P17 respectively. 

Race one welcomed sunshine across the 17 turn track as Johnathan had a good start gaining P3 after an excellent challenge against Simmons. Hoggard was able to hold onto to this position till the end. This podium finish gained crucial points in the championship. The American driver Kris Wright also had a successful race gaining three positions on the track to finish P14, whilst Maldonado finished P16 after pitting for a new nose after contact. 

Race two began with Manuel on pole position due to the reverse grid of which was destined to be an entertaining race for the Silverstone crowds. Whilst the conditions were bright the track was wet which proved to work in the favour of the Venezuelan driver as he showcased his driving ability. Maldonado finished first at the end of race but what added to the team’s elation was that he finished over four seconds clear of the driver in P2. Furthermore, this made him the thirteenth different winner of the championship. Kris Wright also had a successful race gaining his best ever result of this season with P5. Hoggard was unfortunate to finish P14 due to an incident at the beginnings of the race at Club Corner.

The final race of the weekend saw Hoggard start P3, however, due to a chaotic first lap was unfortunate to slip back. Despite this Hoggard carried on strongly and finished a commendable P5. Manuel gained two places during this race finishing P11 with Kris Wright also making progress to finish P15. 

The team look forward to continuing the exciting championship at the final round at Donington on the 14th of September.
