Oliver Rowland takes podium finish

26th April 2014 – Motorland, Aragon: The World Series by Renault hosts it’s second round of the Formula Renault 3.5 this weekend at the Spanish circuit of Motorland in Aragon. For Fortec racer, and FR3.5 rookie, Oliver Rowland the weekend couldn’t have got off to a better start when the Racing Steps Foundation backed driver took a spot on the podium with a third place finish in today’s race.

Fortec Motorsports were the only team to have two drivers start in the top ten in this afternoons race, with both Oliver Rowland and Sergey Sirotkin having both put in impressive qualifying times to start P2 and P9 respectively.

As the lights went out it was a varied start for the Fortec drivers as Rowland got caught up in the mix, out-braking himself and dropping down into fourth, whilst Sirotkin found himself move up four places to sit just behind in fifth. The field powered on for the next few laps and fell into order, with Sirotkin settling in seventh and Rowland remaining in fourth giving chase to Zoel Amburg (AV Formula) who sat in third.

Formula Renault 3.5 rookie Rowland looked determined to get into the top three as the race continued, never falling of Amburg’s tail and applying the pressure. As both fought on it was on lap twelve that Rowland built up speed on the straight and lunged passed Amburg to seize third.

Marlon Stockinger (Lotus) also got passed Amburg and sat just behind Rowland in fourth. However, as both chased a podium finish Rowland put in good speed to hold Stockinger off, defending his position up until the chequered flag to take a well-deserved place on the podium in third. Sergey Sirotkin went on to finish within the points with a respectable eighth place.

Commenting on today’s race and qualifying session, Team Manager Jamie Dye said: “Today was a good start to the weekend, with a small mistake costing Oliver pole and putting him on the dirty side of the track! The big thing for the team is two cars in the points again. We now look forward to further achievements on Sunday.”
