27 Jul Podium finish for O’Keeffe in Spa
Callan O’Keeffe gained a podium finish in third after starting his first race in second. After briefly falling behind Jorg off the starting line into third, O’Keeffe took the outside line in the first lap to re-gain second place. Alex Gill, after starting in twelfth, gained a position during the opening lap putting him in eleventh while Jehan Daruvala continued in to race in sixth. Ferdinand Habsburg, after starting in ninth, went into the pits after the opening lap before suffering an early retirement in the first race of the weekend.
Although O’Keeffe fell down to third, his battle with Jorg continued for second position throughout the race, with O’Keeffe continuously putting pressure on Jorg for the place. Meanwhile, Daruvala was able to defend his sixth position against Vanthoor.
By the halfway mark, Gill was in a three way battle for twelfth. Having overtaken Noble to gain twelfth, Gill lost the place again to Noble and Eastwood shortly before regaining thirteenth. Having defended his third position in third against Deletraz in the closing stages of the race in some close battles, O’Keeffe began closing the gap to second. By the final lap, O’Keeffe was able to go on the attack, putting pressure on Jorg right up until the chequered flag.
O’Keeffe went on to cross the line in a close third position, while Daruvala finished sixth. Gill finished the first race of the weekend in thirteenth.
The second race of the weekend was controlled by the safety car from the start to finish due to the treacherous weather conditions. After more than fifteen minutes behind the safety car, race control made an appropriate decision to bring the race to a stop with conditions far from improving.
Accordingly, the race result corresponds to the result of the second qualifying session. As a result, Gill finished in fourth, Darvuvala in sixth and O’Keeffe in eighth. Habsburg, after a visit to the pits for repairs due to aquaplaning, finished in twenty-third. As only 50% of the race was run, it was only possible to award half points.
