Podium finish for Ticktum at Oulton Park

Dan Ticktum began the first race of the weekend in seventh. Newcomer, Toby Sowery started off in eleventh closely followed by Josh Smith in twelfth. Unfortunately, Sowery’s debut race with the team was short lived after spinning off in the second lap. Coming to rest in a dangerous position, the safety car had to be deployed for a lengthy period.

With the safety car in at the end of lap six, and little time left on the clock, the racing could finally get going but Smith continued in twelfth, while Ticktum remained in seventh. Ticktum continued to chase Barlow throughout the race, narrowing the gap to just 0.2s in the final two laps.

A technical issue in the last two laps cost him two places, resulting in a ninth place finish. Smith crossed the line in twelfth.

The second race saw Ticktum on the podium in a well-fought third place and also was able to get up on to the top step of the rookie podium. After finishing ninth in the first race, Ticktum started the second race in second. Sowery, after crashing in the first race, started at the back of the grid in twenty-first. Smith started his brief race in twelfth but in the first lap, he retired from the race.

Sowery soon increased the pace and moved up into fourteenth position. Ticktum, meanwhile, was chasing Baybutt and was quick on his tail. Ten minutes into the race and Ticktum had closed the gap to just 0.2s and was then able to make the deciding move which pushed him up to third. Sowery continued to push, gaining thirteenth.

Into the last lap, Ticktum continued to push in third while Sowery couldn’t hold Pull back any longer, and lost thirteenth place. Sowery crossed the line in fourteenth.

The third race of the weekend saw some great overtaking by the Fortec trio. Starting in eighth Ticktum put pressure on several drivers throughout the race duration. The equally competitive Sowery was able to gain five places, after starting in eleventh.

The opening stages of the final race at Oulton Park saw two incidents within the field resulting in all three Fortec cars gaining a place, putting Ticktum in sixth, Sowery in eighth and Smith in eleventh. The first came at the hairpin on lap one when Herta, racing for Carlin, locked up and cannoned into Martins’ SWB Motorsport car immediately in front. Shortly after Leist, driving for Double R, collided with MBM driver Barlow, resulting in a safety car period.

At the end of lap five, the safety car was in and the race resumed. With nine minutes left on the clock, Sowery gained a place, progressing to seventh.

In the final stages of the race, Ticktum was able to get passed Florescu for fifth, taking the rookie class lead. With Leist’s exclusion, Ticktum was classified forth. Sowery crossed the line in sixth while Smith claimed his best finish of the weekend in tenth.
