20 Oct Rowland takes record eighth win at Jerez
The Formula Renault 3.5 Series took to the Spanish circuit of Jerez to contest the final rounds of the championship. After being recently crowned the 2015 champion, Oliver Rowland continued his success this weekend by setting a new record on Saturday, scoring the most points in the championship.
Rowland started the first race of the weekend in second behind the safety car, due to a damp track. As the safety car returned and the race went green, Rowland continued in second while Jazeman Jaafar, who had started in fourth, began to defend from Vaxiviere. Rowland took the lead in lap ten of the race after the race leader, Dillman, suffered a puncture before being able to break away from the rest of the field to increase his lead. After defending his position for a number of laps, Jaafar lost two places to de Vries and Ellinas, before finishing the race in sixth. Rowland went on to take his eighth victory of the season, crossing the line with an impressive 14s lead.
The final race of the season saw yet another podium finish from Rowland. Starting from pole, Rowland was able to able to hold on to the lead on the getaway. However, after a mistake, de Vries, Orudzhev and Vaxiviere were able to get passed which dropped him down into fourth. Meanwhile, Jaafar, who had started in fourteenth, managed to progress up into twelfth. The safety car was then deployed after Zlobin went through the gravel. On the restart, Jaafar gained another place up into eleventh while Rowland continued to fight to regain his position in fourth. After the pit-stop window, Rowland got passed Vaxiviere into second place while Jaafar progressed up into ninth. The safety car was then deployed for the second time in lap seventeen, after an off circuit excursion from Nissany. On the restart, Rowland continued in second place and took a podium in second. Jaafar went on to cross the line in eighth place.
