Strong results for Dennis, Pakari and Jones in opening qualifying session

27th April, Motorland Aragon – In the opening round of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, the Fortec Motorsport team of Ed Jones, Mikko Pakari and Jake Dennis took some great results in the first qualifying session for race one.

Using the usual format of qualifying in two groups Group A, with Pakari, were up first on the wet track. The young Finnish driver put in some strong lap-times and was soon on the charge. As the time continued to count down the fifteen-minute session, Pakari’s times dropped as he consistently improved his sector times. However with the short session there was no time to put in another flying lap as the track begun to dry. Pakari crossed the line to qualify a respectable twelfth in-group, putting him twenty-third overall.

Next up was Group B with Dennis and Jones. Going fastest in yesterday’s practice session there was pressure on Dennis but the young 2013 McLaren Autosport award winner wasted no time in showing he had the pace. As the young British diver continued to improve his lap times, he jumped into third with just three-minutes left on the clock – crossing the line to qualify third in group and sixth overall.  For Jones the session went well and, despite the lack of grip from the tyres as the track begun to dry, the 17-year-old qualified sixth in-group seeing him start this afternoon’s race from twelfth.

Commenting after the session Jones said: “Despite the rain visibility was better than yesterday, there was more rain in the night but no standing water – making it a greasy track and difficult to find grip. I’m aiming for a top 10 finish and kind of hoping for rain as it will make the race more interesting.”

Dennis said: “Visibility was bad but it wasn’t that much of an issue. I qualified third in group but sixth overall -which isn’t brilliant after yesterday’s practice results but you can still win the race from that position! We’re looking through the data to see where I can find some time, so hopefully I’ll be able to pull out some speed for the race. To qualify P6 isn’t too bad but I would have liked to have done better. I feel positive for the race as long as the weather goes one way or the other….I don’t mind which!
