Success in Spa for Tarun Reddy and Fortec Motorsports in BRDC British F3

11 July, 2016:  18-year-old Tarun Reddy achieved his third 2016 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship podium trophy during a solid performance from his Fortec Motorsports team at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend. Team-mate Al Faisal Al Zubair also came away with the Driver of the Weekend accolade for the most number of successful overtaking manoeuvres at the Belgian event.

Preparations for rounds 16/17/18 of British F3 series got underway with three practice sessions at the legendary racing circuit in the Ardennes region on Thursday. In unusually mild conditions for this time of year at the Belgian track, Reddy and Al Zubair started the weekend in earnest by qualifying in P10 and P19 respectively for the start of race one on Friday.

Round 16 was incident filled from start to finish, with an early mid-field clash bringing out the safety car. The Fortec pair made good progress at the restart and avoided a further coming together ahead of them, before contact between Akhil Rabindra and Quinlan Lall (Chris Dittmann Racing) behind them sent the American into the barriers at turn 15. The race was immediately red flagged and then declared with the result taken from the previous lap (lap five) meaning Reddy finished in sixth place with Al Zubair close behind in P8 for the Daventry-based team.

With the top-eight from race one being reversed for the race two grid, Al Zubair started from pole position on Saturday morning with Reddy sitting behind him in P3. As the lights went out it was Reddy who made the best getaway out of the Fortec duo to charge in to an early lead.

An epic battle between Reddy and Toby Sowery (Lanan Racing) in P2 ensued showcasing the Indian’s ever improving race craft during position swapping manoeuvres. Sowery was able to pull off a final move for the lead down the Kemmel Straight, with Randle joining in the fight to ultimately take the win in the closing minutes of the race.

Reddy defended his P3 position until the chequered flag to secure his third podium trophy of the 2016 BRDC British Formula 3 championship season. The top-10 was completed by Al Zubair in the #7 Fortec Motorsports Tatuus-Cosworth.

The Fortec pair faced the tough task of starting from tenth and sixteenth positions for the start of round 18 in the afternoon. With very little room to challenge within the competitive mid-pack procession, Reddy and Al Zubair took the chequered flag in ninth and fourteenth place respectively at the end of the nine-lap weekend finale.

Tarun Reddy, #14 Fortec Motorsports:
“It was nice to have a strong weekend and to grab a another podium on this iconic circuit. We were constantly towards the front in the races and scored a good haul of points. Big thanks to the Fortec boys once again!”

Russell Dixon, team manager, Fortec Motorsports British F3 Team:
“Tarun had a good event, showing a competitive pace throughout the weekend. He worked hard on his driving and getting the car to his liking which paid off with his third podium of the season. I feel we learnt a lot from this weekend which we will help us in the later stages of the championship. Al Faisal had a disappointing qualifying, but raced well over the three races earning him the Driver of the Weekend Award for the most overtakes. He gained valuable experience from his reverse grid pole, which will hopefully give him confidence for the next round at Snetterton.”

Rounds 19/20/21 of the British Formula 3 Championship take place at the Snetterton circuit, UK, on 6th – 7th August 2016 alongside the Snetterton 300, British GT event.
