01 Jun Two podium finishes for Gill in Donington
The Protyre Formula Renault Championship was at Donington this weekend for rounds 4, 5 and 6. Fortec Motorsports driver Alex Gill had another superb weekend; taking two podium positions in the first two races and a top five finish in the last race.
Gill was mightily impressive in qualifying to secure his first pole position, taking the top spot on the grid by 0.160 seconds. He also set the second fast lap, which saw him take another pole position for race two. The weekend’s second qualifying saw the Doncaster racer set the fifth fastest time.
Taking place on Saturday, the first race of the weekend saw Gill make a slow getaway and slip down into second. However the young racer was soon on the charge and was maintaining his position despite coming under pressure from the chasing field.
Gill became under major attack for the runner-up spot. Colin Noble Jnr (MGR) piled on the pressure initially; swarming all over the back of the Fortec machine, but the advancing Piers Hickin (Knaphill) quickly came into play.
Into fourth on lap two, Hickin then made the most of Noble being bottled up behind Gill to take third from the Scottish youngster at Redgate on lap three. Setting his sights on Gill, the Scorpio made a move and grabbed second.
Gill’s third place then looked under threat from Noble, but he held on and crossed the line to take his third podium in as many races.
Sunday’s second race of the weekend took place in glorious sunshine. Gill had a good start from pole but was overtaken going into the first corner by Pietro Fittipaldi (MGR).
Gill maintained his pace and ran in second throughout, crossing the line to take another podium finish.
“I had a bit of a bad start”, commented Gill, “I tried to go up the inside of Pietro [Fittipaldi] but then had four other cars on the inside of me, so had to back out. We might not be getting the wins, but podiums are still good.”
Sunday’s third and final race of the weekend saw Gill line up on the grid in fifth. The young driver defended his position up to the chequered flag, crossing the line fifth and 0.7 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
The next round takes place at Brands Hatch 26th-27th of July.
