06 Aug Two podiums for the team in Assen
The Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) took place at Assen last weekend (2nd-3rd August) and saw the team of Ben Barnicoat, Seb Morris and Martin Kodric come away with two podium finishes.
For race one (round 10) on Saturday, the morning’s qualifying session saw some good results with Ben Barnicoat lining up in third, just in front of Seb Morris in fourth. Martin Kodric lined up in 20th position.
Keen to retake his lead in the championship Barnicoat was quick off the start line and took advantage of a mistake in front to take second. Chasing to catch Callan O’Keefe (ART Junior Team) in first, Barnicoat was on the charge. He managed to profit from a mistake from O’Keefe into turn three to close the gap. As the race continued, Barnicoat was unable to make move and crossed the line in second, retaking his lead in the championship.
“I had a really good start. After the mistake of Deletraz I was able to move into second.” Commented Barnicoat. “I tried to push and keep the pressure on O’Keefe but I couldn’t get close enough, however I am really pleased to be on the podium.”
Behind, teammate Morris had also made a good start from fourth. The young Brit was consistently improving his lap times however the order remained unchanged and he took the chequered flag just 0.5 seconds adrift of the podium. Kodric was the final Fortec man to cross the line in 18th.
Sunday’s second race (round 11) saw Seb Morris return to winning ways with a supreme victory by a very respectable 7.5 second winning margin, also posting the fastest lap of the race.
Qualifying saw Morris take pole position for Sunday’s race by almost 0.5 seconds ahead of teammate Ben Barnicoat. As the lights went out Morris slipped behind Barnicoat off the line, but moved into the lead on lap two when Barnicoat was forced into retirement due to a mechanical problem.
Instantly opening up a healthy advantage at the front, Morris eased to a 7.5 second victory on lap 16 after a faultless drive.
“Ben got me off the line and we were set for a good race, then he had his mechanical problem and that made things much easier for me”, commented Morris, “After that, I was able to just drive away and I could do what I wanted with the car. Winning by almost eight seconds was fantastic.”
Teammate Martin Kodric also had a successful race, finishing inside the points and crossing the line in ninth from 12th on the grid.
The next round of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC is in Most in the Czech Republic over the weekend 30th/31st August.
